The Fralin Foyer : photo by Malcolm Aslett
The Fralin is a small gallery slash museum on the grounds of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. While large galleries make you feel guilty about not looking at all the stuff this one is very much Goldilocks sized. Not too big, Not too shabby. Someone did a great job with the entrance which is exceedingly bright and uncluttered. A very welcoming space with an attractive group of modern pieces that aren't too intimidating. I took in more or less a quarter of the space in front of me. Twelve o clock to three o clock, if you happened to be a gunner on a flying fortress in the Second World War and are used to that sort of language. Two walls appear flat, front and right, while the central section is a transition area with the brightness and darkness of the front entrance taking up position. Certain things have disruptions removed, so the main wall with large colourful canvas is left to navigate easily. The floor honeycombed with tiles is never going to fit together unless something drastic is done and I wasn't prepared to do that. The front doormat is doubled, with two images overlapping. For me this softened the transitional area and seemed more acceptable to the eye. Below is a section of a joiner taken of a Native American themed exhibit in the same museum. |
